Microbial Analysis

The cultivation, harvesting, and processing of cannabis creates an environment for bacteria, fungi, yeast, and mold thrive. Some fungi can produce toxic metabolites known as mycotoxins which can infect immunocompromised humans and cause allergic, aflatoxin and pathogenic infections such as the disease Aspergillosis.

Therefore, when the ideal growing conditions are created for the cultivation and harvesting of cannabis, so are the conditions and environment for bacteria and fungi to grow and thrive. Large green plants provide a welcoming ecosystem for a number of biological organisms, including several types of molds. Certain species of molds seem to have a preference for cannabis plants. The moisture and heat present in the cultivation and harvesting environments can cause a mild infestation to become a crop-wide epidemic.

Mycotoxin Analysis

Mycotoxins are nonliving, toxic compounds that are produced as a byproduct of certain molds and fungi. They grow on many different kinds of agricultural crops, and can sometimes be produced during cannabis cultivation and grow on cannabis. They are particularly likely to develop in warm, moist environments. The two most common mycotoxins found on cannabis products are aflatoxins and ochratoxins. Products that failed testing for Aspergillus may be remediated after subsequent testing for mycotoxins in accordance with R 420.305(3)(h).
